| I lived on a farm near Tewkesbury‚ my dad worked long hours‚ my brother helped him and my mother worked all day to make ends meet. So I was left to my own diversions all day every day.
The walk to school was 3 miles‚ so I walked 6 miles alone each day through the narrow lanes of the countryside. We were 2 miles from the river that often flooded‚ if I was at school when it did‚ we had to stay at the army camp in Ashchurch until the water subsided or my dad fetched me and we returned through the floods on the tractor.
School holidays were spent alone; I walked through the fields and woods‚ singing all the way at the top of my voice‚ not a care in the world. I swung for hours on the gate beside the railway line‚ waving at the passing trains‚ screaming with joy when the driver blew his whistle as he passed me. Happy days‚ such innocent pleasure‚ no dangers‚ such happy memories of my adventures alone in the countryside.
