The Time Capsule - 1920s

Adolescence - 1920

Mother said‚ "Now the facts of life it is time to tell".
Her wise counsel I always followed well.
Now at last‚ when all was said‚
Mother remarked‚
"Never let passions rule your head!
You must aim to be a trusted wife.
To have no regrets for the rest of your life".

I seemed to be burgeoning from head to toes.
My altering body would not fit my clothes.

If spoken to‚ I would blush.
Oh! how I hated my cheeks to flush!
Often I felt the urge to cry‚
Quite unaware of the reason why.

The emergence from child to womanhood is strange.
The child remains dormant‚ in spite of the change.
There are flights of fancy‚ times of despair.
In any arguments‚ the opposite I would dare!

Boys now gave me a grinning "Glad Eye"‚
When in company passing me by.
Charles‚ my brother's friend‚ asked‚ "why so haughty?
Kissing games are not considered naughty!"

Then tried to kiss me‚ seeing me home from a dance.
When he thought he would have the chance.
I slapped his face so very hard.
He staggered back against the yard!

"Hey! What a spitfire you've turned out to be!"
"Then don't you dare take advantage of me!"
"A kiss is a compliment‚ that everyone knows".
"Not for me: think of the trouble it can pose".

"How I pity the man who marries you!
that will be the day he will always rue!"
I heard him laugh as i walked away.
And felt a pang of sheer guilty dismay.

I also felt lonely and sadly left out.
what was this tension all about?
How can one know what to do?
When hormonal emotions play havoc with you.
