The Time Capsule - Stories

At E.R.Watts and Sons - 1943

I worked in an optical instrument factory in Camberwell Road in South London all through the war. I slept in the basement and one night a bomb fell in the canal next door and we were thrown out of our bunks. It was a very stout wall and nothing was damaged.

We did not have "Music while you work" but everybody whistled the latest music. One of the directors was a Mr.Whipple so we used to whistle "Whipple while you work"! (The old song "Whistle while you work".)

On one occasion I was coming down the outside stairs and had to pass a flue from the paint shop ovens and at that moment there was a big explosion in the ovens and I got a blackened face much to everyones' amusement.
